Warner Bros. Pictures with Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke successfully transformed the usual Red Riding Hood child story to a more adult and with a twist that everyone will never forget. Red Riding Hood is now showing in all cinemas nationwide (as of March 11) and starring Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Shiloh Fernandez, Max Irons and Julie Christie.
Like the usual Little Red Riding Hood story, the Red Riding Hood movie consists of Valerie (Seyfried) and Grandmother (Christie). But this it become more complicated by making Valerie the Red Riding Hood as young lady with love interest and facing a bigger challenge to fight the werewolf. Set in a village with new characters in the story, the suspense thriller aims to create a new perspective to the Charles Perrault and later Brothers Grimm’s Little Red Riding Hood.
In regards with the storyline, David Leslie Johnson, the writer of the film executed in story which will not alienates the viewers and lead them far from the usual red riding hood character they knew. Valerie, the Red Riding Hood was given a new personality that was a rebel and more mature compare to the sweet girl we knew from the book, along with the rest of the characters. But, I find it awkward when prominent part from the book adapted to the movie was not perfectly executed.
Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Twilight and also in Red Riding Hood, long shots showing the “sceneries” was prominent in the movie. The sad and pale texture shows how scary and tragic the movie was. Honestly, the red coat of Valerie compliments with the texture of the movie and I really enjoyed the scene where she was walking and the wind blew on her coat.
In its third day in cinema since it opens last March 11, Red Riding Hood grosses P16.6-M which was reported by Francis Soliven, general manager of Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc., the movie’s local distributor. Trinoma (P1.37-M) posted the biggest opening among theatres overall, followed (in descending order) by SM Mall of Asia (P771,339), Greenbelt 3 (P735,102), Glrorietta 4 (P721,754), Power Plant (P594,461), Eastwood (P558,333), SM Megamall (P519,588), Alabang Town Center (P489,527), SM North EDSA (P458,796) and Gateway Cineplex (P455,722).
