In Chinese astrology, each animal sign is associated with one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The elements rotate through the 12 animal signs, creating a 60-year cycle. Therefore, the Year of the Wood Dragon comes around once every 60 years. The last Year of the Wood Dragon was in 1964, and the upcoming one is set to start on February 10, 2024.
While the association between specific events and a particular year in the Chinese zodiac is based on traditional beliefs and is not scientifically validated, some people find significance in reflecting on historical events from the previous Year of the Wood Dragon as a way to gain insights or draw parallels.
International feng shui expert Marites Allen sees this significance as the basis for her devoting a section of her annual horoscope books to a review of the last year of the ruling animal. She provides a snapshot of the major cultural, political, and historical events of that year, not really to mirror what could happen, but to understand the potential influences of the upcoming one.
Some events listed in her book include:
● The heightened involvement of the United States in the escalation of the Vietnam War, leading to a significant impact on international relations and global politics.
● The Civil Rights Act, which was intended to eliminate racial discrimination and segregation, was signed into law in the US.
● The Good Friday earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2, rocked Alaska on March 27, 1964 causing widespread destruction and loss of many lives.
● The Beatles, the legendary British rock band, skyrocketed to international fame and caused a cultural phenomenon known as the “British Invasion” and “Beatlemania.”
● In the Philippines, noteworthy events included the moving of the country’s Independence Day celebration from July 4 to June 12, the crowning of Gemma Cruz as Miss International, and the wrath of Typhoon Louise–Marge (local name: Ining–Liling) that affected 13 provinces and caused millions worth of damage and death toll in the hundreds.
On a lighter note, Marites says that the Dragon is widely regarded as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and success, which influences the desire for Dragon babies. Couples often strive to conceive during Dragon years, as it is believed that children born in these years will inherit the Dragon’s auspicious qualities and enjoy a prosperous future.
The feng shui expert stresses that many factors contribute to the unfolding of events in any given year. “It’s crucial to remember that the Year of the Wood Dragon, like any other year, will be shaped by a complex interplay of global events, individual actions, and changes in society,” she concludes.
