As Ateneo Blue Repertory (BlueRep) joins the opening a new school year with a musical play that will bring us back to memory lane where we started to have our first love and crush, dreams to be popular and faces challenges as young adult. I am referring to the 2008 Broadway musical play entitled “13”. It started inLos Angeles in 2007 and 2008 in Goodspeed Musicals with lyrics and music by Jason Robert Brown and a book by Dan Elish, with Robert Horn newly joining as co-librettist.
The Ateneo BlueREP production of 13: The Musical is under direction of Christopher “Toff” de Venecia and with cast members including RJ Santillan, Bernice Reyes, David Mercado, Roxci de Leon, RayaEsteban, Darrell Uy, Nikki Surtida, Wrench Canicosa, Maronne Cruz, Abegail Esteban, andArjo Mejilla. It will run from July 25 to August 11, 2012 at the Fine Arts Theater, 3/F Gonzaga Hall, Ateneo de Manila University.
The musical follows the journey of Evan Goldman, a 12-year old Jewish boy who moves with his family from New York City to Appleton, Indiana, who is now counting days in celebration of his Bar Mitzvah or reaching the age of 13 for boys and 12 for girls where they will be considered young adults that will have responsibility for Jewish ritual law, tradition, and ethics and are able to participate in all areas of Jewish community life. With the new world that he will be entering that is filled with different kind of personalities and characters he will be meeting new friends and frenemies that will challenge his personality and at the same time will bring out the sense of individuality within him.
