Known as the Iron Lady of the Philippines, former senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago passes away at the age of 71 from her battle of lung cancer early morning of September 29. Her husband Attorney Jun Santiago confirmed the news of Santiago’s passing. According to Jun, her wife died peacefully in her sleep this morning.
Miriam was confined at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City.
She informed the nation of having stage 4 lung cancer and manages to run for President in 2016 election where she lost with now President Rodrigo Duterte. This was her third time to ran for presidency, the first was in 1992 where Fidel V. Ramos won and in 1998 where Joseph Estrada won.
Miriam was known for being feisty and fierce in Senate with her strong commentary regarding several issues. She was born in Iloilo City on June 15, 1945.
