It’s hard to go to the movies or turn on the TV without seeing some new superhero movie. Comic books are big business and companies are trying to make money wherever they can, whether through movies, TV, or video games. One of the most anticipated upcoming movies is the latest reboot of Marvel’s legendary Spider-Man franchise. The character already made a huge splash on the big screen and the publisher is pulling out all the stops for the wall-crawler with a new movie as well as a video game.
Production on the new film has begun in earnest with plenty of new photos trickling in showcasing the latest star to wear the famous red-and-blue spandex suit, Tom Holland. The new actor made quite the entrance with his appearance in the latest Marvel epic, “Captain America: Civil War” and many are already calling Holland the best Spider-Man yet. The character’s appearance was notable because the rights to Spider-Man are still owned by Sony while Captain America and the rest of the Avengers are owned by Disney. The appearance in “Civil War” marked the crossover of the character into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was further reinforced by the inclusion of Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming movie, “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
There are still some that are apprehensive about the new movie. Cinema Blend recently reported that the latest film may feature the hero squaring off against three separate villains, something that has fans worried for the future of the franchise. It’s generally recognized that superhero movies that feature whole collections of villains tend to be of worse quality and the approach has worked out poorly for Spider-Man in particular. “Spider-Man 3” and “Amazing Spider-Man 2” had three villains each and were the worst reviewed of all the Spider-Man films. Hopefully “Spider-Man: Homecoming” will be able to buck the trend.
It looks like Marvel is going for broke with its push for the latest reboot of the company’s flagship hero. Not only does the company have a fresh movie prepared to storm the cinemas next summer, but the company is also working on a new video game for the popular character as well. One of the highlights of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo was the reveal of a new, open-world Spider-Man game being published by Sony for the PS4. The game is being developed by Insomniac, the creators of the popular Ratchet and Clank franchise, and will be the first of a planned series of games by Insomniac and Sony. Sadly, there’s still no release date, but we’re guessing that fans will have to at least wait until next summer so the game can cash in on the release of the new movie.
The last stand-alone video game for Spider-Man was “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (based on the movie of the same name) back in 2014. Unfortunately, like the film, the game received lackluster reviews and was hardly the experience fans were looking for with their favorite web-slinger. Thankfully, Spider-Man has still made plenty of appearances on mobile devices through the character’s inclusion in several casual games from Gala Bingo that put Peter Parker against one of his greatest enemies, the Green Goblin, in his own slot-reel that has fans swinging with their favorite hero through New York City. Spider-Man is also included in a roulette title and has long been a big draw for other games looking to capitalize on the popularity of the comic books o there’s plenty to keep fans occupied while they wait for the new game.
While it’s frustrating to have to wait for both the movie and the game, we’re glad that Marvel seems to be set on taking the time to make sure it gets both of them right. We’ll just have to wait and see but if the movie is half as good as Spider-Man’s appearance in “Civil War” everyone is going to be in for a treat.
