Few days before his inauguration as the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte offers the Department of Environment and National Resources to ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc (ALKFI) chairperson Gina Lopez. Lopez in her meeting with Duterte at the Presidential Guesthouse in Panacan or popularly known as Palacanang in Davao City last June 20, accepts the offer of the President-elect.
Lopez, is known as an environmentalist and anti-mining advocate. She was very vocal in supporting Duterte in his crusade on environmental causes. She is known for taking the lead in Pasig River rehabilitation, which already shown a big transformation in areas where river flow aside from that she transformed communities as river warriors protecting the environment within their areas. She is also known to be one of the advocates of eco-tourism in the Philippines and pro-organic where she introduced G-Stuff that empowers communities and farmers.
With Duterte’s choice of Lopez to join in his cabinet, many of the environmentalists applauded the President-elect’s decision. As the chairperson of ALKFI, she became part of Bantay Bata, Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig, Bantay Kalikasan, Bayan Ni Juan, Programa Genio, Sagip Kapamilya, Bayan Foundation and Educational TV.
