Every October 5 we celebrate Teachers’ Day to recognize and pay tribute to our beloved teachers in their contribution to the lives of every Filipino student from one generation to another. They became our second parents where we spend 8 hours of our lives in 5 days in a week in school. And per class they embrace and understand up to 50 students per classroom or even more. They thought us to be resourceful, creative and hardworking aside from the lectures that we learn during class discussions. With PLDT, they launched a campaign called Gabay Guro that became a recognizing body for teachers who inspire their students and fellow teachers to reach their goals and be more dedicated with their vocation.
Teaching is not a work it is a vocation, that’s how my younger sister thought me who is currently teaching high school students. And funny most of her students are taller than her that’s why they became of sisters and barkada rather than the teacher-students relationship that we always see. And with Gabay Guro of PLDT this kind of passion on their vocation were recognized since 2009. And last Oct. 5 they had a huge gathering of teachers at the SM Mall of Asia Arena to celebrate the National Teacher’s Month together with the pioneering group of this advocacy the PLDT Smart Foundation (PSF) and PLDT Managers’ Club Inc. The celebration were filled with big celebrities giving them songs, dance performances and even the chance of having pictures with our beloved teachers.
Aside from the musicality of the event, they also focused on the pillars of the campaign which are Teachers’ Training that presents new modules on Emotional Intelligence and IT Literacy and Sustainability; Housing and Educational Facilities; Livelihood Programs; Broadbanding and Computerization of Schools; and Teachers’ Tribute.
And of course there are big prizes given to teachers as sign of our big thank you to their dedication in developing future leaders includinginclude a house and lot from Camella Homes, a brand new HAIMA car from Laus Group of Companies, an APE Piaggo three-wing van from Auto Italia, 10 PLDT Home Cyberya Internet Café setups, Retailer Phone Kits and Sims from Smart and Sun, and cash prizes.
Aside from the major prizes they also won PLDT HOME Bro, laptop and tablet in-one from Microsoft, electric fan with oven toaster package from Fujidenzo, gift packs from various sponsors, myPad3 from myPhone, Cignal prepaid kits, quad core polaroid platinum tablets from PLDT HOME Telpad, Samsung tab 7, a trip for two to Hongkong, tricycle from Honda Philippines Inc., and a motorcycle from PR Savings Bank which something that brighten up their day.
Lastly the biggest prize of all was the announcement of the 1,000 scholarship grants to aspiring teachers. It has enabled more than 300 scholars to graduate from its 40 partner schools nationwide. Five of the 2G scholars have continued their quest for higher learning and received Master’s Degree scholarships from the Philippine Women’s University. And good news to the teachers in the earthquake and typhoon Yolanda struck places; the Gabay Guro together with their partners donated some 28 classrooms.
