Before De La Salle University closes their academic year and get ready for a brief summer vacation the premiere theatre organization of DLSU – Harlequin Theatre Guild will be presenting Merlinda Bobis’s Fish-Hair Woman at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium of De La Salle University-Manila. It is Harlequin Theatre Guild’s closing act for their 47th theatre season that will run from March 20 to 22.
Fish-Hair Woman follows the story of a young lady with 12-meter-long hair who live in Iraya. Set in the year 1986 to 1987 on the height of armed conflict between the Philippine government and insurgents. The young lady whose name is Stella became a witness of the said tragedy where her loved one was one of those who disappeared during war. With her long hair she retrieved the hidden corpses of casualties hiding in the tall lemongrass in the river. With her bravery, she recovers the corpses of the missing person in Iraya for families to retrieve to give their final respect and hope for justice.
The story was based in the novel of Bobis with the same title where the real story of what happened in Estancia, Malinao, Albay during the height of insurgency. And Stella’s character was based to Bobis’ grandmother who has the same length of hair and washes it every morning in the river.
Playwright Rody Vera adapted Bobis novel to theater and with the help of Romualdo Tejada who is the Artistic Director and Trainer of Harlequin Theatre Guild who was assigned to be the director of the play everything became possible. Joining the production are Dodjie Fernandez who composed the music, production designer Joseph Duran and director for lights Katsch Katoy.
