Last December 10 at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Central Office in Quezon City, DSWD and United Nations World Food Programme (UN WFP) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) that will benefit the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries in the super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) areas more. Affected areas includes the larger portion of Eastern Visayas that includes Samar, Leyte, Iloilo, Northern Cebu, and others including Tacloban City that was badly affected and damaged by the recent typhoon.
For two-month period the beneficiaries of the 4Ps will be receiving Php 1, 300 on December and another on January 2014 on top of their monthly cash transfer from DSWD which will help them to start a new beginning for their family. On top of that, WFP will be providing them monthly sacks of rice for each household. Up to date WFP together with DSWD and fellow humanitarian agencies from UN had provided not only food, but also medical, sanitary, and nutritional kits that will benefit families most especially the children.
Aside from that they are now helping to build shelter by means of food for work and cash for work that will serve as a starting point for the typhoon affected families in Eastern Visayas. Present at the MOA signing were DSWD secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman and WFP Philippines Country Director Praveen Agrawal. Aside from the Yolanda affected areas, WFP is also working on reaching out to the families affected by the Zamboanga crisis and earthquake in Bohol and Cebu. They are also working on the supplementary feeding program in schools in conflict affected and disaster prone areas in Mindanao particularly in North Cotabato, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Lanao del Norte.
