In line with the opening of the 38th Season of Dulaang UP (University of the Philippines), the school based theater will offer a new taste on well-loved Filipino folklore – the Ibong Adarna. Directed by José Estrella who was also behind the successful Umaaraw, Umuulan Kinakasal ang Tikbalang last season, Adarna will be staged at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Palma Hall, University of the Philippines from July 17- August 1, 2013.
Adarna follows the story of Don Juan, one of the three princes who were task to look for the mythical bird Adarna that was believed that can cure any kind of illness. In order to save their dying father who is the king of Berbanya, the three needed to travel hostile and dangerous roads in order to find the bird. Just like his two brothers, Don Juan will face so many challenges and even meet sage men and beautiful princesses that will test him and make him worthy for the Adarna.
With Estrella’s wide imagination and with the help of her creative team they will give a new approach on the story and give more color with the adventure, magic, courage, and love through the stage design, costumes, music and multimedia theatrical presentations.
Adarna is adapted for the stage by Vlad Gonzales; set and lights design by Lex Marcos; puppetry by Don Salubayba; costume design by Brenda Fajardo; music and musical direction by Jeff Hernandez. Performances will be July 17 to August 1; Wednesday to Friday, 7pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10 am and 3pm), and July 26 at 2pm.
