In line with the annual Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) that includes Xavier School, Hope Christian High School, Grace Christian High School, Chiang Kai Shek College, St. Jude Catholic School, and St. Stephen’s High School as members of the league, BonChon Chicken supports this high school basketball competition to encourage teamwork, love for sports and bring out the future basketball superstars of the country. Now on its 43rd year it is now tagged as The Tiong Lian – BonChon Basketball League which selected games are shown in Basketball TV (BTV) on cable until February 28.
With this kind of inter-school league that develops the athletic skills among the students, the MMTLBA produces several names that became popular in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and even at the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Products of the league include Chris Tiu, a former Team Captain of the Team Gilas National Team and now a prominent rookie on the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters PBA team. Meanwhile, Joseph Yeo and TY Tang who became members of the De La Salle University Green Archers now are playing crucial positions in their respective squads in PBA.
Also products of the MMTLBA are the Teng brothers Jeric and Jeron who are playing as strong rivals in the previous UAAP as key players for UST Growling Tigers and the DLSU Green Archers respectively. Other big names includes Chiang Kai Shek College stalwart Justin Chua who is now part of the undefeated Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, St. Stephen’s High School alumnus Kent Lao who is part of the UST Growling Tigers and Stephenian Emarson Que part of the Team B line up of DLSU Green Archers.
With this kind of activity and also advocacy in making the youth develop teamwork and love for sports, Bonchon Chicken supports it in being one of the champions of the youth. According to BonChon Chicken Philippines Managing Director Scott Tan who is also an alumnus of a Tiong Lian school says that he can clearly recall the impact the Tiong Lian to him and his schoolmates in terms of cultivating teamwork and excellence. “These are the same values that guide the work my BonChon team and I do everyday.” Tan ended.
