Another way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your special someone is to watch a good movie or play that showcases a great love story and They’re Playing Our Song of 9 Works Theatrical is one of the best options to consider. To be staged in the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza, Makati City 9WT’s They’re Playing Our Song will be running from February 8 to March 3, 2013 and features Nikki Gil as Sonia Walsk and Lorenz Martinez as Vernon Gersch. This romantic comedy musical is from the book of Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and music by Marvin Hamlisch and directed by Robbie Guevarra for the 9WT presentation.
They’re Playing Our Song follows the twisted love story of Sonia who is a lyricist who is still bombarded with his ex boyfriend Leon and the top music composer Vernon who sees the beauty and love in the lyrics of Sonia. The story is simple but what’s good with this musical is that it showcases all the songs that we will all agree fell in love with and played in our heads all over again. Songs includes Fallin’ and I Still Believe in Love and everyone can actually relate themselves to Vermon and Sonia musicians or not.
9 Works Theatrical did a great job in bringing back Nikki Gil in their production after the success of Sweet Charity and at the same time giving the lead role to Lorenz Martinez who did a wonderful job in portraying Vernon. I really enjoyed the chorus or should I say the inner voices of the two main characters; Anna Santamaria, Jill Pena, Peachy Atilano, Reb Atadero, James Stacey and Noel Rayos.
This was the first time I saw 9WT having a rotating set which I see cut the time from scene transition which I see will really time consuming if they recreate Vermon’s stiff looking condominium and Sonia’s “loose” apartment that really differentiate the personalities of the two characters.
