Solar Entertainment releases a Spanish-Canadian horror drama film co-written and directed by Andres Muschietti and stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse and Daniel Kash. It currently showing in all cinemas nationwide and it was based from Muschietti’s 2008 Spanish-language short film of the same name.
The film follows the story of two children named Lily and Victoria who survived for 5 years without any help from anyone except from the person they called Mama. This Mama saved them from their father who dragged them in the forest who tries to kill them after kills his business partners and estranged his wife. Away from anyone, the children grew like savage until their uncle found them and tried to give them a better life with his fiancée. Unfortunately, the Mama followed them and became jealous trying to get the two children whom she thought was hers ever since she saved them from their father.
The story of Mama the way I see it is not a 100% horror story the way it was presented it contains a kind of drama which happens to be the mother image in the story is not the usual mother we know. It reminds me of exorcist and paranormal activity but what I really enjoyed in the film is that two children portrayed their roles very well especially the one who played Lily. She may not talk to much in the film except for four words, Mama, Lily, Victoria and Come but the way she look, move and act it was really great.
Aside from that, I find it interesting is how they traces the story of “Mama” and showed some scenes. Others may not like the film because of it doesn’t have those gruesome scenes that includes monsters, killers, etc, but Mama has a great story to tell and really holds on to the theme “A Mother’s Love is Foever” and in deed it was forever.
