In line with the release of the eight (8) official entries for the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival (2012), Superstar Nora Aunor and Angel Locsin are the strong contenders for the Best Actress position. Nora Aunor who stars in the film Thy Womb directed by Brillante Mendoz and produced by Center Stage Productions and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). Aunor played the role Shaleha, a Badjao midwife in Tawi-Tawi. Her everyday battle is the facing the irony of her vocation to her being infertile amidst the deprivation of her community. Shaleha together with other women Mersila (Lovi Poe) and Aisha (Mercedes Cabral) are facing the dilemma of being stuck with tradition and culture. Ty Womb was already introduced at the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival and receives three special prizes including La Navicella Venezia Cinema Award, the P. Nazareno Taddei Award – Special Mention, and the Bisato d’ Oro Award for Best Actress for Nora.
Meanwhile, Angel Locsin who plays one of the lead roles in One More Try is playing the role of Grace a mother who is asking for help to Edward (Dingdong Dantes) who is the father of their child that was diagnosed with an ailment. Directed by Ruel S. Bayani and produced by Star Cinema, the film shows the struggle of a woman who will do anything in order to save her son even though for the eyes of everyone it is not morally right and that is bearing another child the father of her son despite they have separate relationships.
With the weight of the roles that Nora Aunor and Angel Locsin are playing in their respective films it shows that they will be the strong contenders for the 2012 MMFF Best Actress Category. Aside from the two of them, One More Try’s Zanjoe Marudo and Dingdong Dantes, The Strangers’ Enchong Dee, El Presidente’s E.R. Ejercito and Sisterakas’ Vice Ganda are the strong contenders for the Best Actor Category.
The 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival Awards Night will happen on December 27, 2012.
