It’s been more than five years since I joined a red carpet premiere of Star Cinema and the latest was for the film The Mistress that stars Bea Alonzo, John Lloyd Cruz, Hilda Koronel and Ronaldo Valdez. I usually watch movies a week or two after the screening to avoid long lines which Star Cinema is known for because of their blockbuster films, but with curiosity with the plot, characters and setting it made me want to see it earlier before it finally hit the cinemas.
The Mistress was directed by Olivia Lamasan and written by Vanessa Valdez. The film gives a new flavor to the usual romantic-comedy tandem of Bea and John Lloyd to a bolder and more daring roles they way they move, speak and think as they play the character of Sari and JD in the film. And it became more challenging when veteran actors like Ronaldo and Hilda makes that tandem more complicated where Ronaldo plays Rico the husband of Regina played by Hilda and made Sari as his mistress. But the question is how will a person like JD who is aware of Sari’s dark side can actually fell in love and pursue her knowing that the woman whom she loves is very much in love with her benefactor.
What’s great with the film is that Star Cinema presented the background of the four characters especially on where they coming from. Sari having too much burden with her life because of her family, JD a broken soul wanting to a perfect person to make him whole again, Regina a wife who trying to be a perfect person to her husband who obviously is cheating on her and Rico a husband who sees the missing piece of his life to Sari. But aside from the main characters, Carmi Martin and Anita Linda play a vital role in the life of Sari that molds her character and brings her in the situation to be The Mistress and actually fell in love with Rico.
The film is a bold step for Star Cinema to present a perspective of the mistress which we partially saw in the film The Other Woman under the same production. But what’s beautiful in this film is that it takes away the main characters that we usual comport zone and twisted their characters to create a bolder one.
The Mistress is rated PG-13 by the MTRCB and graded B by the Cinema Evaluation Board. Now showing in all cinemas nationwide and for international screening details listed below:
