From 6,525 cities, towns, provinces and municipalities in 150 countries and territories participating on the annual switch off last March 31 between 8:30PM – 9:30PM (depending on the time zone). World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) -Philippineshad proven the commitment of every Filipino in becoming aware and responsible in taking care of the planet. With a record-breaking 1,671 towns, cities, provinces and municipalities in the country it obviously shows that Philippines remains on top spot in this Earth Hour activity in 4 years straight.
Since 2008, WWF-Philippines headed Earth Hour in the country where the key areas that time includes Pasay, Manila, Parañaque and Makati where CCP Grounds is the venue of the first switch off ceremony in the Philippines and 50 more local towns and cities participated on this activity. With the one-hour switch off that begins at 8PM to 9PM that time (March 28), the total power savings amounted to 80MWh and 56MWh was saved in Luzon alone which is equivalent to shutting down a coal-fired powerplant for one hour.
While in 2009,Philippinesbecame known to its big contribution to the Earth Hour activity in terms of the number of cities and town participating on the switch off. That time there were 647 towns and cities joining the event with a million Filipinos simultaneously switching off their lights and saved 611MWh of electricity that is equivalent to a temporary shutdown of a dozen coal-fired power plants.
While in 2010 where the main switch off ceremony happen in SM Mall of Asia there were 1076 towns and cities participated and by 2011 it reaches 1661 where the switch off ceremony happens on the same venue.
And recently, last March 31 at 8:30PM, 1,671 towns, cities, provinces and municipalities joined the switch off ceremony that happens in three key cities including Makati City,Cebu City and Davao City. From the Luzon only activity in 2008 the symbolical global switch off activity reaches all parts of the country and making every Filipino aware and committing themselves beyond the Earth Hour and do more on how to contribute in saving the planet as they combat climate change. The total savings amounted 362MWh where 214MWh was recorded for Luzon, 57MWh for Visayas and 91MWh for Mindanao.
