It’s been a month since Typhoon Sendong (Tropical Storm Washi) struck several areas in Mindanao including Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Bukidnon. World Food Programme with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and other local government units continue its support in helping everyone to recover from the damage brought by Sendong. Most of the families where now transferred to relocation areas to start a new life like in Iligan City where almost 5, 200 families will be transferred to Barangay Sta.Elena. This was the housing project headed by the National Housing Authority headed by Vice President Jejomar Binay.
During the groundbreaking rites of the additional 1, 700 houses that will bring new beginnings to the families of Iligan, Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar Binay, and Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman are joined by World Food Programme Regional Director for Asia Kenro Oshidari, WFP Philippines Country Director and Representative Stephen Anderson, WFP Philippines Iligan City sub-office head Baicon Macaraya, and WFP National Ambassador Against Hunger KC Concepcion were present on the said activity. WFP partners with the national and local government in Iligan, and other affected areas of Typhoon Sendong launched a fund raising project since December that aims to help around 250, 000 individuals affected by Sendong.
The project will cover the three month recovery period where WFP together with the government plans to provide them with following:
- 5 kgs of rice and 5 kg of vegetable oil per family
- 50g of high-energy biscuits as a supplementary food. WFP intends to support 160,000 people.
- 2 jars per child of Plumpy Doz, a ready-to-use supplementary food. WFP intends to support up to 15,000 young children and infants.
- Logistics support for the delivery of 30,000 Philippine Government family food packs before Christmas Eve for all evacuees and other highly affected people.
- Additional non-food items from the UN Humanitarian Response Depot in Subang, Malaysia.
- Effective and efficient logistics support to augment the efforts of the Government of Philippines and other humanitarian organizations involved in the emergency response.
- Cash and voucher programs for low-income and vulnerable families affected by the tropical storm to purchase food available in local markets.
This project still open for those who wants to send help to the families affected by Sendong especially the children who needs nutrition and counseling from the trauma they experience. Visit https://www.wfp.org/donate/emergencies for donation options.
