From the success of Hereafter, Invictus, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino, veteran actor and director Clint Eastwood returns to the big screen as he directs one Warner Bros. Pictures latest offering in 2012 entitled J.Edgar. It is a biographical drama film written by Dustin Lance Black. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas and Judi Dench.
The film follows the career of an FBI director named J. Edgar Hoover (DiCaprio) who has an expertise in modern forensics and created a system of federal laws that transformed the U.S. in a multitude of ways that remain relevant today. Despite of him being feared and revered in the society, rumor about his sexuality sparks during the height of his career and allegedly has a relationship with his protégé named Clyde Anderson Tolson (Hammer). The biographical drama film will show the private and public life of Hoover as he works to fight crime but at the same time defend himself from the buzz thrown to him.
Eastwood gains interest in the story of Hoover and wanted to explore his character more in the film. “Hoover was a top cop, or a top ‘G-Man,’ as they called them in those days, but I didn’t really know much about him. He kept a high profile—he was seen with movie actors and famous writers at social gatherings and what have you—but he was an enigma in many ways.” He says.
Regarding the part where it tackles the people that has relationship with Hoover, Eastwood says that the film has a perfect elements of it and the intimate interactions between Hoover and everyone around him, from those closest to him—Clyde Tolson, Helen Gandy, his mother—all the way to Robert Kennedy and other well known political figures, even presidents. He claims that he enjoys exploring why people do or did certain things in their lives.
