From Panaginip na Fili to Rixal X, Dulaang UP (University of the Philippines) brings another musical that will pay tribute to our National Hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal in his 150th birth celebration. The musical play is entitled Noli Me Tangere: The Opera, it is based from one of his novel about the love of Juan Crisostomo Ibarra to Maria Clara who was accidentally to be a daughter of a friar named Padre Damaso. With this kind of scandal and being tagged as enemy of the church and state, Ibarra will face the hardship and disapproval of those who once believed in him. The musical play will run on November 16 – December 4, 2011 (Wednesday – Friday, 7PM; Saturday and Sunday, 10AM and 3PM) at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman.
The musical play is directed by DUP Artistic Director Alexander Cortez and under the music and voice supervision of Camille Lopez Molina. Joining the cast of Noli Me Tangere: The Opera were Myramae Meneses, Antonio Ferrer, Kuya Manzano, Elainne Vibal, Chuck Hipol, Mark Queddeng, and veterans Jonathan Velasco, Jean Judith Javier, Joy Abalon Tamayo, Cynthia Guico, Rica Nepomuceno, and Natasha Cabrera. From those who saw the Tanghalang Pilipino’s presentation of Noli Me Tangere, popular songs from that play will be performed with more operatic way like the songs of Kay Tamis ng Buhay (Maria Clara), Lupang Pangako (Maria Clara and Crisostomo Ibarra), and Awit ng Gabi (Sisa). Actors from Dulaang UP will complete the cast while the accompanists are pianists Noel dela Rosa and Christine Park.
Production design is headed by Gino Gonzales who used Philippine indigenous materials for the sets and the inabel cloth from the Ilocos region for the costumes. Lighting designer Jon Jon Villareal, sound designer Jethro Joaquin, choreographer Dexter Santos. Winter David provides video support to the special props designed and executed by John Gaerlan.
