Last August 18, Starbucks Coffee opened its 182nd branch in the country under its authorized local licensee Rustan Coffee Corporation. The latest branch was in J.P. Laurel Building located at the Roxas Boulevard corner Pedro Gil Street in Ermita, Manila. Aside from being popular to the younger coffee lovers including the students and young professionals, the Starbucks Coffee J.P. Laurel Building branch is very special because like the one in The Fort, it is a concept store which inclines to “Filipino heritage”. The interior of this Starbucks Coffee branch has a distinct look of 70’s architecture design that has high ceiling and wide area to occupy up to 80 coffee lovers inside the store. And in the outside a plain yet elegant glass exterior that eliminates beautifully at night time because of the light coming inside.
The heritage theme of Starbucks Coffee in J.P. Laurel Building pays tribute to the Philippine President where the building was named – President Jose P. Laurel who’s administration runs from 1943-1945. Starbucks decided not to overhaul the building especially its interior instead they restore the original wood moldings that wraps the soffit and keeping the wood sun breaker behind the glass perimeter of the store.
Being true with it’s 70’s architectural design, Starbucks included several elements such as high wainscot wrapped around pillars or columns, high and regular wooden chairs, gas lamp like halogen ceiling lights that gives that nostalgic feeling along with the side and counter golden plated lamps and of course the wooden flooring.
With a ceiling and energy saving lights, it gives moderate lighting inside the coffee shop while in the morning with glass wall and sun breakers brings in the natural light l from the outside. It lightens up the store without giving much heat from outside.
From the usual Starbucks product paintings in their other branches, J.P. Laurel has photos of the old Manila hanged on their walls including the big paintings that welcomes the coffee lovers as they enter the store. Starbucks J.P. Laurel branch is open from 6:30am – 1:30am from Monday to Saturday and 7:30am to 12:00a during the rest of the week.
