ABS-CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) advocacy is set to break its own Guinness World Record through this year’s biggest eco-foot race “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River.”
“11.20.2011 is a mirror date. It symbolizes the ‘Salamin ng Langit’, our goal of reflecting the skies into a clean estero and Pasig River,” said Gina Lopez, AFI managing director and concurrent Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission chairperson.
The funds of last year’s run went into the further rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, putting up phytoremediation and aeration technologies to restore the water quality and provide aesthetic community gardens around the estero.
This year’s run will go into initial rehabilitation of Estero de San Miguel, one of the five network of esteros behind the Malacañang.
In 2010, the fun run helped raise awareness and funds for the Pasig River rehabilitation and registered a record-high 116,086 runners for “most participants in a racing event.”
“Last year, we had a crowd estimate of easily around 150,000 people,” said Lopez. “But we weren’t able to count everyone properly because we used the manual count.”
This time, the organizers will be using radio frequency identification (RFID) tag attached to the race bib to automatically count the runners as they step on the start and finish lines.
The run will have three categories: the 3K, 5K, and 10K routes. The 3K starting line will be at Roxas Boulevard corner V. Sotto, 5K at Roxas Boulevard corner Pedro Gil, and the 10K at Ocean Drive corner Bayshore Avenue, all ending up in the same finish line—the globe in SM Mall of Asia.
A ceremonial 21-kilometer run, not open to the public, will be participated by KBPIP sponsors and partners. It will go around Metro Manila, passing by Estero de Paco.
Powerhouse race directors Eric Imperio, Thumbie Remigio and Rio Dela Cruz, who also directed last year’s fun run, return to take charge of the 11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River. They will be joined by newcomer PJ Villarta.
The 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River won a Bronze Anvil and an Award of Excellence at the 45th Anvil Awards given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, while the Estero de Paco clean-up earned an Award of Merit from the 2010 Philippine Quill Awards given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.
Registration for the 11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River will be open by mid-September. For more information, you may visit www.runforthepasigriver.com, or like their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/runforthepasigriver and follow them on Twitter at twitter.com/run4pasigriver.
