Metro Manila will be alive again with the voices of Maria and the von Trapp children as Resorts World Manila (RWM) brings the all Filipino production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s The Sound of Music. This musical play will be staged at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) of RWM on October 15, 2011 to December 11, 201. The presentation was directed by Roxanne Lapus and joining her a power cast of theater veterans and production team.
The Sound of Music was initially introduced in Broadway in 1959 and won the Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Actress. Up to date it has a total 1,443 performances in various countries including the 1980 performance of Repertory Philippines where it stars Lea Salonga, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Monique Wilson and Raymond Lauchengco. While in 2006, Audie Gemora joins the new cast of Rep Phil’s re-staging of The Sound of Music. The musical play also gives way for Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer to show their singing talent when it was adapted to a film in 1965. And now one of the most popular musical plays in the world will be coming back again in the Philippines with new cast, production designs and more visuals presentations that is fit in large stage of NPAT with The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra headed by Maestro Rodel Colmenar will be providing the music in the play.
Members of the cast include Joanna Ampil with Cris Villonco as her alternate. Meanwhile, the strict but loving Captain Georg von Trapp is reprised by Audie Gemora with Ed Feist as alternate. The quiet and understanding Mother Abbess is portrayed by Pinky Marquez with Sheila Francisco as alternate. The role of the charming and ambitious Max Detweiler is shared by Miguel Faustman and Robbie Guevara. The captain’s fiancée, Baroness Elsa Schraeder, is played by Pinky Amador and Lynn Sherman.Liesl, the eldest of the von Trapp siblings is portrayed by Tanya Manalang with Rachel Coates alternating. Rolf, Liesl’s love interest, is depicted by Marvin Ong and Bryan Homecillo. The rest of the von Trapp children are played by Paolo Luis Ocampo, Luis Nieto (Friedrich), Danielle Sanghio, Rebecca Coates (Louisa), Atasha Muhlach, Janina Punzalan, Alessandra Allado (Brigitta), Roberto Sison, Anton Posadas, Justin Sian (Kurt), Alida Moberg, Paula Therese Zamesa, Sofia Yabyabin (Marta), Alexa Villarroel and Shanti Gleason (Gretl). Other supporting cast members include Debraliz Valasote (Frau Schmidt), Eduardo Bouffard (Franz the Butler), Lorenz Martinez (Herr Zeller), Jennifer Villegas, Carla Guevara (Sister Berthe), Sarah Facuri, Pamela Imperial (Sister Margaretta), Jillian Peňa, and Maxine Sian (Sister Sophia).
The production and creative group include Lyn Fabella (Vocal Director), Francis Libiran (Costume Designer), Mio Infante (Production Designer and Scenographer), Paul Soriano and (Video Producer).
The Sound of Music will run from October 15, 2011 to December 11, 2011.
