We all know William Shakespeare as an academic requirement in our literature classes. For others they might even participated on a class presentation of Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, Anthony and Cleopatra and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. And with Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), they will bring back all those memories where we are required to participate in our literature class and dissect Shakespeare’s novels and poetry through the modern musical play William. This modern musical that uses hip-hop and rap music aims to bring the message to younger audience on how Shakespeare communicate with us and how we can relate with his works even in the modern times.
The story is simple; it’s about a group of students who were required to recite a monologue from any Shakespeare novel. But from the process of getting their piece, they end up seeing their own selves and understand that William is actually communicating with them and understanding how every line from his poetry or novel is like a dagger piercing their soul and heart. The class presentation serves as a realization to each student and it strengthens their bond as friends.
Like what I mention, the story is simple but the think I like the most is how they uses modern music to communicate with the younger audience which I know and I believe I am still part of it. The hip hop and rap blends perfectly with the storyline and it doesn’t look “pilit” or awkward. All the characters act naturally and I enjoyed the actress who played as a teacher in the story. Aside from the music and actors, I love the set especially when you are sitting at the middle or from the back it was totally cool especially when all the lights light up during the finally. So I suggest that everyone should watch William and I am very sure that everyone can relate and see themselves in every character on this musical play.
