In line with the celebration of its 20th season, Ateneo Blue Repertory (blueRep) brings The Little Shop of Horrors, an Off-Broadway Musical that based from the 1960 film directed by Roger Corman with the same title. This rock musical composed by Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman will be performed at the Fine Arts Theater, 3rd Floor Gonzaga Building in Ateneo de Manila University and it will run from August 10 – 27, 2011. It was directed by Toff de Venecia, a blueRep alumni and now part of the 9 Works Theatrical team.
Little Shop of Horror follows the story of Seymour Krelborn, a nerd and unnoticeable employee of Mushnik’s Skid Row Florists owned by Mr. Mushnik. He was in-love with his co-employee named Audrey. Unfortunately, Audrey was already committed with Orin Scrivello, a sadistic dentist and abusive dentist. Seymour accidentally created a specie similar to a venus fly trap that feeds on blood and human flesh. He named it Audrey II in honor of his beloved Audrey who usually ignores him at the shop. With the creation of Audrey II, it brings luck to Mushnik’s Skid Row Florists and let Seymour and the plant and instant celebrity until the maker became the slave because of greed to have ownership of the shop and Audrey’s attention until that greed eats him along with the person around him.
From Dulaang UP (University of the Philippines), LIVE AIDS of SAMASKOM (University of the Philippines), and Viare (University of Asia & Pacific), this was my first time to see the students of Ateneo showcasing their talents in acting on stage and its musical. I am glad that there are organizations like this in schools that encourage the students to share and show their talents on acting, dancing and singing that is beyond their academics.
Among the young performers that caught my attention was Tina Ramos who played Audrey II, for a young woman like her who doesn’t have much of vocal training she did her Audrey II performance very well. The rest were fantastic along with the trio that also serves as narrator of the story. One thing I notice that stage designers should be aware on up to what extend that their set will last, luckily despite of minor flaws on the floor that caught the attention of many they did pull it off safely. I’m looking forward for more performances that blueREP will be doing in the future. For those who wanted to watch tickets are available just call Mica Fajardo at 0917.890.8795.
