After Romeo and Bernadette, Repertory Philippines brings Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood, a farce inspired from William Shakespeare’s story with a modern twist. Directed by Jamie del Mundo and actors including Hans Eckstein, Red Concepcion, Robie Zialcita, Arnel Carrion, Caisa Borromeo, Cris Villonco, Miguel Faustmann, Joy Virata, Reuben Uy, Topper Fabregas, Rem Zamora, and Nic Campos, the play will be staged at Onstage Theater, Greenbelt 1 in Makati City on April 1-17.
Inspired by The Midsummer Night Dream, Oberon (Eckstein) and Puck (Concepcion) mistakenly transported to the studio of Warner Bros instead to the forest outside Athens. The two mythical creatures will discover the adaptation of their story to a movie lead by Max Reinhardt. They will see and feel on how to be a star and to be part of the creation of the movie.
The play reminded me of Romeo and Bernadette, but this time it was funnier especially the character of the dumb blonde Louella Parsons (Villonco) and Puck. Of course Faustmann who played Will Hayes will always be unforgettable especially the “narcissistic” part of the story.
For a Shakespeare fan, Shakespeare in Hollywood was breather and something worth watching if you wanted to have more of the out of the box presentation of a Shakespearian play. And for those who love Shakespeare, Repertory Philippines will be giving away Blackberry Phones for those who bought orchestra front and center tickets that cost P800 and can distinguish Shakespeare symbols or elements in the play and write it on the survey after the presentation. Rep Phils will raffle all the entries on the last day of the play and will announce it on the same day.
Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood will run on April 1- 17, 2011 with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 p.m. All performances are at Onstage, Greenbelt 1, Makati City.
