I had fun watching it! That’s the answer I can give if someone will ask me how’s the Tourist, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp’s movie in Columbia Picture. The Tourist is based from the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The Tourist is showing in all cinemas nationwide beginning January 8.
Despite of several negative reviews of the movie, I still have the urge to watch it and here’s my comment on the film. First, I want to see how Hollywood adopts or remake the original French film and to be honest aesthetics wise the shots and the ambiance were beautiful but the chemistry of Angelina and Johnny is weak. But the weak chemistry doesn’t stop portrayal of their characters; Elise Clifton-Ward (Jolie) and Frank Tupelo (Depp).
For Angelina, she gave justice to the role of Elise, an elegant and mysterious woman in search for his fiancé and used Frank (Depp) to be her scapegoat. As for Johnny, playing the role of Frank is just doing Jack Sparrow without the pirate attire; it’s comical and clueless type of a character. That is why there is no spark in their first tandem in the movie, but to be honest the way the story was crafted I think it doesn’t really require them to have that kind of romantic chemistry.
In terms of visuals, it was shot mostly long shots, it help the viewers to take part in the search for Alexander Pearce, Elise fiancé. Aside from that kind of camera technique, it also makes the movie goers to appreciate the beauty of Paris and Venice. I have to say this, I always love the shot where two characters in separate room divided by wall and characters are waiting who will take the move to open the door. It gave the audience peek on each character at the same time.
Even though Wikipedia pre-empted the ending of movie, The Tourist is a kind of movie that is worth watching, forget the romantic chemistry, it is a drama action film that has an elegant-stiff leading lady and a comical-clueless actor that doesn’t need a spark because that have their own role to play in the story. The film is showing in all cinemas nationwide beginning January 8 and it is distributed by Columbia Pictures.
