Last November 13, one month ago, I was invited by the Habitat for Humanity in one of their building activities in Caluag Street in Pasig City. It was honor to be invited and to take part of their advocacy. Community development and building is one of the areas I am dreaming to touch with in my advocacy.
The Caluag community will adopt various families from Pasig including with those from the Manggahan Floodways. The Pasig City government selects the families who will be given the opportunity to avail one of the rooms of the 4-story apartment that Habitat for Humanity is building. They are kind of families who can afford to pay a minimum of 500 Pesos per month or more, and can join the building of their houses.
I was fortunate to experience to be a Habitat for Humanity volunteer for a day; I am hoping to be part again soon. With fellow volunteers, I experience how the carpenters build houses. Families who will be rewarded were required to participate in building which in their case they call it sweat equity which a corresponding time is required to do the task. In that way the families who participated with the sweat equity will see the importance of the houses they acquired.
The importance of taking part of this kind of activity, like for Habitat for Humanity, the more number of volunteers will help the families lessen the cost of what they will be paying every month aside from faster building. Volunteers will experience all the process including the creation of the blocks that is used for the building. The blocks is so unique like a lego blocks that can easily please on top of each blocks.
For those who wanted to volunteer, visit Habitat for Humanity website http://habitat.org.ph and start building homes! Habitat for Humanity is not only based in Metro Manila, there are several building activities in other regions. Like in Jaro, Iloilo City where 500 families who were victims of Typhoon Frank was awarded a home and a new life because of Habitat for Humanity and its volunteers.
